This church was mentioned to Lowry by his father. It is said that Lowry’s father rarely took much interest in his art so the interest he showed in St. Simons Church must have been quite something.
Lowry took a sketch of St. Simons Church and around a month later it was no longer there as it was already due for demolition at the time that Lowry drew his sketch.
Maybe the fact that St. Simons Church is no longer there, makes Lowry’s artwork of it even more special – if that is actually possible…
